The Story of Sookie Sookie
My grandmother nicknamed me Sookie, and from the time I could hold a crayon in my hand I kept myself busy drawing pictures to adorn my mothers refrigerator. Not always the academic student my parents wanted me to be, I can remember my mother getting phone calls from my teachers telling her that I was drawing pictures of horses instead of doing math like the rest of the students. After I graduated from high school, I studied fashion illustrating at the Harris School of Art in Franklin, Tennessee. Watercolor, pen & ink became my favorite medium. After I married and our children were young, my husband worked full time and I made extra money at home creating custom watercolor stationary of peoples houses and painting seasonal greeting cards. I continued with painting classes and also spent several years faux painting walls and furniture for interior decorators. After moving to Austin with my husband and children I tried working outside of the home, but just couldn’t find anything that truly made me happy the way that my art had always done. Needing an artistic outlet, I started working with different types of clay and fell in love with designing pendants to coordinate with beaded necklaces. People would stop me and ask where I had bought them and sometimes offer to purchase them off my neck. I started selling my pieces to local gift shops and boutiques. I gave up my full time job, turned half of my house into a workshop and have not looked back. Because Sookie Sookie jewelry is handmade from start to finish, no two pendants, earrings or rings will ever look exactly the same- giving each piece a one of a kind feel!
I am often told that Sookie Sookie is a "Happy" jewelry line and makes me people feel good to wear it. I hope that you will enjoy it too!
